Arctic ice reaches lowest extent for 2013 | Climate News Network

By Alex Kirby

The extent of sea ice in the Arctic appears to have reached its lowest point for 2013 – more than last year, but well below the long term average.

LONDON, 21 September – Scientists say the sea ice which covers much of the Arctic Ocean appears to have reached its minimum extent for this year.

The fate of the ice year by year is an important indicator of the impact of climate change on the Arctic, where average temperatures are rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world.

The Arctic is melting, and temperatures nearby could reach 8°C, the scientists say

By Alex Kirby

Eleven days before the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change publishes its latest report, a group of eminent scientists says there is massive evidence of human responsibility.

LONDON, 16 September – With the IPCC report not yet published, there is already heated debate about what it will say, and about the implications of its findings for human development.

The scientists’ statement is unequivocal, and is not based on whatever the IPCC may publish. They say: “The body of evidence indicating that our civilisation has already caused significant global warming is overwhelming.”

Sky Arts Ignition : Memory Palace - About the Exhibition - Victoria and Albert Museum

Sky Arts Ignition: Memory Palace - About the Exhibition - Victoria and Albert Museum

18 June – 20 October 2013

Sky Arts Ignition: Memory Palace brings together a new work of fiction by the author Hari Kunzru with 20 original commissions from leading graphic designers, illustrators and typographers to create a multidimensional story.

The way we read books is changing. Memory Palace explores how a story might be imagined in a different format – as a walk-in book.
The Story

Hari Kunzru’s story is set in a future London, hundreds of years after the world’s information infrastructure was wiped out by an immense magnetic storm. Technology and knowledge have been lost, and a dark age prevails. Nature has taken over the ruins of the old city and power has been seized by a group who enforce a life of extreme simplicity on all citizens. Recording, writing, collecting and art are outlawed.

The narrator of the story is in prison. He is accused of being a member of a banned sect, who has revived the ancient ‘art of memory’. They try to remember as much of the past as they can in a future where forgetting has been official policy for generations. The narrator uses his prison cell as his ‘memory palace’, the location for the things he has remembered: corrupted fragments and misunderstood details of things we may recognise from our time. He clings to his belief that without memory, civilisation is doomed.
The Commissions

The chosen practitioners work across a variety of fields, from comics and editorial illustration to advertising and typography. The broad selection of contributors demonstrates the exceptionally diverse and expanding worlds of contemporary graphic design and illustration.

Kunzru’s story is written in a series of short passages that move in a non-linear way through the dystopian world he created. Each of the designers and illustrators worked on a different passage of text from the story, responding freely to the text. The resulting commissions vary dramatically in scale and format, from intricate hand-drawn works to large three-dimensional environments.

Une introduction à l’« Orient compliqué » :

A Short Guide to the Middle East : letter to the editor published in the Financial Times

That whole Middle East deal sure can be confusing. Thankfully, in this concise and clearly articulated letter to the editor published in the Financial Times, Mr KN Al-Sabah, of London, lays it all out in a way anyone can understand. In full, his letter, entitled “A Short Guide to the Middle East,” read:

Sir, Iran is backing Assad. Gulf states are against Assad!
Assad is against Muslim Brotherhood. Muslim Brotherhood and Obama are against General Sisi.
But Gulf states are pro Sisi! Which means they are against Muslim Brotherhood!
Iran is pro Hamas, but Hamas is backing Muslim Brotherhood!
Obama is backing Muslim Brotherhood, yet Hamas is against the US!
Gulf states are pro US. But Turkey is with Gulf states against Assad; yet Turkey is pro Muslim Brotherhood against General Sisi. And General Sisi is being backed by the Gulf states!
Welcome to the Middle East and have a nice day.

Black people twice as likely to be charged with drugs possession – report | World news | The Guardian

Black people are not just significantly more likely to be searched by police for drugs than their white peers, but face almost double the chance of being charged if any are found, according to a study of racial disparities in the way drug laws are enforced.

The study showed, for instance, disparities for cocaine possession in London, with 78% of black people charged, compared with 44% of white people. Black people were also almost twice as likely to be charged for possession of cannabis in the capital.

The report, which analysed Home Office data in conjunction with freedom of information responses from police forces in England and Wales, also uncovered what the authors call a “postcode lottery” in the apparent racial basis for drug policing. While black people were just over six times more likely to be searched for drugs nationally, this was significantly higher in some places. In one police area, Dorset, the differential was 17 times.

« The architecture of Sound », par Tanya_Harris (interview par Soundry)

“The architecture of Sound”, par #Tanya_Harris (interview par #Soundry)

You made recordings of churches around London to eventually produce your own sound patterns. How exactly did you record these different acoustics and turn them into visible vibration ?

Inspired by Alvin Lucier, a music composer who discovered a technique to record the resonant frequency of a space. I recorded the silence of the church and then played this recording back into the church while re-recording it. I repeated this process over and over again until the resonant frequencies of each church became audible.

Building my own cymatic experiment enabled me to see the hidden geometry of sound. It consists of a 450 watt amplifier that I made which is attached to a 15 inch bass speaker cone. I vaccum formed the speaker with thin plastic which allowed me to put water inside the speaker. When frequencies are played through the speaker- the water arranges itself into geometric patterns.

Your photographs of oscillating water surfaces are beautiful: how did you catch them and how did you then turn them back into stone ?

I took these pictures in a dark environment. I used an angle-poise magnifying lamp and positioned it over the water in the speaker so that it created a ring of light on the water. I removed the magnifying glass and took the pictures through the centre of the circular light.

Having photographed the pattern, I created a vector and laser graved the pattern onto the stone that the churches were made from.

World's first synthetic hamburger gets full marks for 'mouth feel' | Science |

World’s first synthetic hamburger gets full marks for ’mouth feel’ | Science |

All it took was a little butter and sunflower oil and, in less than 10 minutes, the world’s most expensive burger, grown from muscle stem cells in a lab, was ready to eat.

“I was expecting the texture to be more soft,” said Hanni Rützler of the Future Food Studio, who researches food trends and was the first to get a taste of the synthetic beef hamburger at a lavish event in London on Monday that bore more resemblance to a TV set than a scientific press conference.

The lack of fat was noticeable, she added, which meant a lack of juiciness in the centre of the burger. If she had closed her eyes, however, she would have thought the cultured beef was definitely meat rather than a vegetable-based substitute.

Mazloom, une pièce théâtrale

Mazloom is a portrait of a young refugee, Asef, alone in London, whose life is being torn apart by the impending prospect of deportation to Afghanistan.

The script came about as a result of an 8 month project run by Kieran Sheehan Dance Theatre in collaboration with Merton and Wandsworth Asylum Welcome. Sara Masters (writer) and Kieran Sheehan (director/choreographer) worked with a group of six young Afghan asylum seekers to create a piece of performance. This explored their experiences both before and after coming to the UK and their responses to turning 18 and losing their protection - their right to remain - in the UK.

Fearful of their fragile positions in the UK and terrified of what life would be for them in Afghanistan, Mazloom is an intimate portrayal of an isolated young man on the brink. This was workshopped and performed at The Old Vic Tunnels and went on to be seen at a variety of venues, raising awareness of the dangers unaccompanied asylum-seeking children face, as they turn 18.

Mazloom - having been further developed by the Media Arts and Drama departments of Royal Holloway, University of London, and with new film footage and sound track by film-maker Sue Clayton (Hamedullah: the Road Home) - is now going on a national tour. Playing the part of Asef is actor Priyank Morjaria.

The tour has been made possible through the financial support of RHUL, National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns, Dover Detainee Visitor Group and Kent Refugee Action Network.

Mazloom is touring as part of Young People Seeking Safety Week 2013, the third annual week of celebration and action of the YPSS network.

Art Fatigue in London -

Art Fatigue in London -

LONDON — The spring auctions here, which ended on Thursday night, were a sharp contrast to those that recently took place in New York. There was not a night in London over the last two weeks when sales reached nearly $500 million, as happened in May at the Christie's evening sale of postwar and contemporary art in New York.
