Yinka Shonibare, MBE: El Futuro del Pasado at Alcada 31 in Madrid

El Futuro del Pasado at Alcalá 31 in Madrid is the first solo exhibition of Nigerian-British artist Yinka Shonibare’s work in Spain. The show features a series of photographs based on Francisco de Goya’s etching “El sueno de la razón produce monstruos” (“The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters”) from his “Los Caprichos” series. Also on display: the work Shonibare did for the Fourth Plinth in London; “The Big Three”, a group of sculptures representing the managers of the three major American car companies; the film “Un Ballo in Maschera”; the first group of collages made by Shonibare; and “Cannonball Heaven”, an installation produced especially for this show. The exhibition has been curated by Octavio Zaya.

XL Gallery at ARCO Madrid 2011 / Interview with Sergei Khripun

Apart from the general program, ARCO Madrid 2011 presented special sectors again, such as “Focus Russia”, a section hosting eight Russian galleries: XL Gallery; M & J. Guelman Gallery; Aidan; Anna Nova; Marina Gisich; GMG; Paperworks and ARKA. The selection was made by Daria Pyrkina, curator at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Moscow and professor at Moscow State Lomonosov University.

VernissageTV had a closer look at one of the Russian galleries, XL Gallery from Moscow. We met with the assistant director, Sergei Khripun. In this video interview, Sergei Khripun talks about the history and program of the gallery, the focus on Russian artists, the importance of art fairs for the gallery, the collectors, the situation of contemporary art in Russia and ARCO Madrid. At ARCO, XL Gallery presented works by Chernyshev & Shulgin, Anna Jermolaewa, Oleg Kulik, Igor Makarevich, Sergei Shekhovtsov, Igor Moukhin, and Bluesoup Group.

Los Carpinteros: Sala de Juntas / ARCO Madrid 2011

The Cuban artist duo Los Carpinteros created the stand of the Spanish newspaper El País at the international art fair ARCO Madrid 2011. The installation titled “Sala de Juntas” recreates the moment of an explotion in a company’s office.The exploded pieces are suspended in the air. Los Carpinteros are Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés (Camagüey, Cuba, 1971) and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez (Caibarién, Cuba, 1969). In Spain, Los Carpinteros are represented by Ivorypress Art + Books.

Interview with Juana de Aizpuru at ARCO Madrid 2011

Juana de Aizpuru opened her first gallery in Sevilla in 1970. In 2010, she celebrated her 40th Anniversary. In 1983 she opened a second gallery in Madrid. She created ARCO International Contemporary Art Fair in 1982 and was for a long time the director of the fair.

Galería Juana de Aizpuru is representing artists such as Albert Oehlen, Miroslaw Balka, Dora García, Joseph Kosuth, Heimo Zobernig, Sol LeWitt, and other renowned artists.

In this video interview at ARCO 2011 in Madrid, the renowned gallerist taks about her career as an art dealer, the importance of art fairs for her gallery, how ARCO came about, and what she thinks of the recent development at ARCO.

Interview with ARCO Director Carlos Urroz / ARCO Madrid 2011

Carlos Urroz was Deputy Director of ARCO, the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, from 1994 to 1998. Last year, he was appointed Director of the fair, succeeding Lourdes Fernández. In this video interview the new director of ARCO talks about the new direction of the fair, the collaboration between ARCO and IFEMA, the highlights of the 2011 edition of ARCO, the challenges in a difficult economic environment, online art fairs, and the main goal he wants to achieve with ARCO 2011.

ARCO Madrid 2011

Under the new director of the art fair, Carlos Urroz, ARCO in Madrid has become smaller, some say more focused. The number of galleries and side projects has been reduced. In addition to the general programme, the fair features ARCO 40 (galleries presenting a maximum of 3 artists), and curated programmes: Focus Russia, a selection of Russian contemporary art galleries and collectors curated by Daria Pyrkina; Solo Projects, one-person projects selected by a team of international curators; and Opening, a selection of European galleries under eight years old, curated by Maribel López. This video provides some impressions from the first of the professional days. An interview with the new director of ARCO, Carlos Urroz, and more coverage of ARCO is coming soon.

David Bowen: Growth Modeling Device / VIDA 12.0 International Awards / ARCO 2010

This is a short interview with David Bowen, who won the third prize in the VIDA 12.0 Fundación Telefónica Art and Artificial Life competition. VIDA rewards electronic works of art produced with artificial life technologies. The other laureates of the 12th edition of the award are Guy Ben-Ary, Philip Gamblen, Peter Gee, Nathan Scott, Brett Murry, and Dr. Steve Potter and his team (first prize with Silent Barrage), and Andreas Muxel (second prize with Connect).

Growth Modeling Device is a kinetic installation based on the rate of growth and structure of a onion plant. In this video, David Bowen explains how his Growth Modeling Device works.

David Bowen’s Growth Modeling Device has also won grand prize in the art division at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival. His Wind Drawing Device is currently featured in Data + Art at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Michael D. Linares: Oasis / ATM Contemporary | Altamira / ARCO 2010

The Solo Projects are an essential part of ARCO Madrid. The Solo Projects section aims to compliment the general program of the fair with one man show proposals presented by an international group of curators appointed by ARCO.

One of this year’s solo presentations is Michael D. Linares‘ installation Oasis (Inclusive Structure) at ATM Contemporary | Altamira. It’s a pyramid of cooling boxes with beer cans inside. In this video, Michael D. Linares gives us a short introduction to his installation.

The work has been proposed by the independent Spanish curator Juan de Nieves.

It’s the 29th issue of the international fair for contemporary art in Madrid, Spain. This video provides a walkthrough of ARCOmadrid_2010 on the first of the two days for professionals. This year’s guest city is Los Angeles.
