The Legend of the Shelves / Autocenter, Berlin / Interview

The group exhibition The Legend of the Shelves was created on the occasion of the relocation of Berlin’s art space Autocenter. For this exhibition, Autocenter invited all the artists whose works have been shown in the gallery in the past 12 years to create new work for the show. Works by 159 artists are on display, installed in the shelves of the former library. Thus, The Legend of the Shelves is both a “who’s who” of the Berlin art scene and kind of an Autocenter retrospective. The independent exhibition space Autocenter was founded in 2001 by the artists Maik Schierloh and Joep van Liefland in an auto body shop as a not-for-profit space for art.The new space is located at Leipziger Straße, in central Berlin.

In this video, Joep van Liefland (co-director of Autocenter) talks about the history of Autocenter and its diversification; shots feature works by Andrew Gilbert, Olaf Nicolai, Thomas Scheibitz, Thomas Zipp, Martin Eder, Anouk Kruithof, Suse Weber, Stefan Rinck, Tjorg Douglas Beer, Vaclav Girsa, Ben Cottrell, etc. The show runs until April 6, 2013.
