Black Mauritanians suffer ’slavery-like’ conditions, says UN | Global development | theguardian.com

Black Mauritanians are still subject to slavery-like practices, including sexual violence and discrimination, a UN human rights expert has said.

The UN special rapporteur on racism, Mutuma Ruteere, told the Guardian that generations of people, particularly women and girls, were still living with families in a “slavery-like” relationship, and were being forced into sex with male relatives, in some cases with their fathers.

“You have situations where people still live with and are working for certain families, and where women are forced to have sexual relations with family members – fathers and sons,” said Ruteere, speaking from Kenya. “And there are situations where children, particularly the girls who are the products of those relations, are then forced to have sexual relations with the same family members.”

“This kind of relationship is going on over generations. There is a lot of sexual violence against these women and girls, I met individuals who are subjected to this. It’s a situation that is slavery-like.”

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Billings, Mont., on Thursday to protest a local judge’s light sentence for a rapist whose teenage victim killed herself.

State District Judge G. Todd Baugh, 71, gained national notoriety this week after sentencing former high school teacher Stacey Dean Rambold, 54, to a month in prison for raping a 14-year-old student. The rest of Rambold’s 15-year sentence was suspended, which means he would serve his term outside of prison.

The crowd gathered Thursday to call for Baugh’s resignation as well as a review of the sentence after his comments that the teen was “older than her chronological age” and “as much in control of the situation” as her teacher was.

Uncertain State: Photography & the crisis in Ireland

How is photography responding to the crisis? Uncertain State looks at how photographic artists are representing this period of austerity and uncertainty in Ireland. Their work addresses important issues at the heart of where we are now: contested and hidden histories, effects of the global financial crisis and the radically altered social and physical landscapes. The ten artists in Uncertain State go beyond surface readings to reflect the emerging concerns in post-Celtic Tiger Ireland: the treatment of asylum seekers; institutional abuse; sexual abuse; emigration; the legacy of the property crash; identity; disadvantage & marginalisation; and the legacy of conflict.

- Two Chorales a) from the St. Matthew and b) St. John Passion by J.S.Bach in a setting for viol consort - Ernst Stolz plays the viol (viola da gamba) - in playback?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The melody of the 1st chorale "O Welt, ich muss dich lassen" is a loan from Heinrich Isaac's  "Innsbruck ich muss dich lassen".

[...]

This famous melody was most likely composed by Heinrich Isaac from whose pen we have two 4-pt settings, the earliest with the melody in the tenor, the latest with the melody in the soprano part (it has not been definitely established, however, which version came first.) In any case, the earliest appearance of this melody as used by Isaac dates roughly from about 1490. The text used by Isaac is secular in nature and reflects the poet’s/singers’ sadness and reluctance in departing from the city where he will leave behind him his beloved as he sets forth to go elsewhere in the world. Without being able to provide clear evidence for their suppositions, musicologists have surmised that Isaac may have derived/taken the melody from a 15th-century folksong or frottola, but the majority of musicologists believe that it might be Isaac’s own melody. Certainly the excellence of his settings aided in the quick dissemination of this melody so that was already being used for sacred songs as early as 1505. In 1550 it was used as the basis of the CM for the CT Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ (see: CM Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ)
