Douze mille personnes spoliées, deux villages détruits, onze mille hectares de champs et vergers saisis : au #Cambodge, les compagnies sucrières dépossèdent des milliers d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants de leurs terres. Cette attitude prédatrice est encouragée par la politique commerciale de l’Union européenne, qui absorbe 97 % des exportations cambodgiennes de sucre.

L’initiative européenne Tout Sauf les Armes part d’une bonne intention : accorder aux pays les plus pauvres un accès au marché européen libre de toutes taxes douanières ou de quotas. Mais dans certains cas, elle a des effets dramatiques pour les populations locales.

Ainsi, au Cambodge, les avantages consentis par l’UE aiguisent l’appétit d’entreprises sucrières qui expulsent des milliers de paysannes et paysans de leurs terres et vont jusqu’à détruire des villages pour produire davantage.

There are problems with hydrogen in transport, however: the gas needs to be stored and transferred at high pressure, and it’s highly flammable. This has prevented the technology from being implemented in small vehicles.

But Zhang’s proposed solution to this problem is simple. “Why should we transport hydrogen? We can transport sugar instead, and perform the reaction in the car or in the service station.”

Using solid sugar as raw material, he wants to create cheap bioreactors that will produce hydrogen, as required, using the enzyme cocktail developed at Virginia Tech.

The ultimate test for the method’s viability will be the creation of a prototype, but at the moment researchers are still working to obtain maximum efficiency from the reaction.
