Madrigal: What is our life? - Orlando Gibbons (1583 - 1625)

"Gibbons taste whilst composing his madrigals was for English poetry. What is our life is a fine example it is believed to have been written by Sir Walter Raleigh on the eve of his execution in 1618, a parody of words on the play of life before that which must end all life."

Hor che 'l ciel e la terra e 'l vento tace

Settings:  Rore, Ia5, 1542

Notte ‘l carro stellato in giro mena,
Veggio, penso, ardo, piango e chi mi sface
Move ‘l dolce l’amaro ond’ io mi pasco
Una man sola mi risana e punge
Perchè ‘l mio martir non giunge a riva,
Mille volt’il dì moro e mille nasco,
Tanto da la salute mia son lunge.

  Now that the sky and the earth and the wind are silent
and the beasts and the birds are stilled by sleep,
night draws the starry chariot in its course
and in its bed the sea sleeps without waves.
I see, I think, I burn, I weep, and she who fills me with sorrow
is always before me in my sweet suffering,
I am in a state of war, full of pain and anger,
and only in thinking of her do I have any peace.
Thus only a clear and living fountain
can still the sweet bitterness on which I feed.
One hand alone can heal and pierce me
therefore my suffering can never be concluded.
A thousand times a day I die, and am reborn
so that I am always far from my salvation.

--------------------------------------------------------

Ardo, ardo, avvampo, mi struggo; accorrete,
vicini, amici, all'infiammato loco,
al ladro, al ladro, al tradimento, al foco;
scale, accette, martelli, acqua prendete;

e voi, torri sacrate, anco tacete?
Su, su, bronzi, ch'io dal gridar son roco;

ecco i rimedi omai vani e fallaci.

(rather vague)

I Burn, burn, burning up, I suffer; forth,
neighbors, friends, inflammation site,
the thief, the thief, treason, burned;
ladders, axes, hammers, water take;

and you, consecrated towers, yet you speak?
Up, up, bronzes, I am hoarse from shouting;
others say the danger is not small or little,
degl'incendi and ask my pity.

The thief are two beautiful eyes, and love him
the arsonist who torches the unfair
m'avventò inside the fortress of the core:

here are the remedies henceforth vain and fallacious.
I said yes to each one blessed passion:
Let 's heart s'incenerisca and keep quiet.

YouTube - Italienische Madrigale "Ride la Primavera" SWV 7 by Heinrich Schütz

No details about the interpretation available

---------------------------------------------------

text in IT & DE incl. score - heinrich-schuetz-haus.de

Ride la primavera,
torna la bella Clori,
odi la rondinella,
mira l’herbette e i fiori.
Ma tu Clori più bella,
nella stagion novella.
Serbi l’antico verno,
deh, s’hai cinto il cor
di ghiaccio eterno.
Perchè, ninfa crudel,
quanto gentile,

Warum, Nymphe so schön,
grausam von Willen,
trägst du im Aug die Sonn,
im Sinn Aprilen?

Monteverdi: Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti - Fouchécourt, Padmore

---------------------------------------------------------------
Poet: Ottavio Rinuccini

Text & english translation via rm144.wordpress.com
and some informations on the music historical background.

Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti
l’aer fa grato e’il pié discioglie a l’onde
e, mormoranda tra le verdi fronde,
fa danzar al bel suon su’l prato i fiori.

Inghirlandato il crin Fillide e Clori
note temprando lor care e gioconde;

come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Return O Zephyr, and with gentle motion
Make pleasant the air and scatter the grasses in waves
And murmuring among the green branches
Make the flowers in the field dance to your sweet sound;
Crown with a garland the heads of Phylla and Chloris
With notes tempered by love and joy,
From mountains and valleys high and deep
And sonorous caves that echo in harmony.
The dawn rises eagerly into the heavens and the sun
Scatters rays of gold, and of the purest silver,
Like embroidery on the cerulean mantle of Thetis.
But I, in abandoned forests, am alone.
The ardour of two beautiful eyes is my torment;
As my Fate wills it, now I weep, now I sing.

"Fine knacks for ladies"

Fine knacks for ladies, cheap choice, brave and new,
Good penny worths, but money cannot move;
I keep a fair, but for the fair to view;
A beggar may be liberal of love.

Though all my wares be trash, the heart is true.

Great gifts are guiles, and look for gifts again,
My trifles come as treasures from my mind,
It is a precious jewel to be plain:
Sometimes in shell, the orient pearls we find.

All others take a sheaf, of me a grain!

Within the pack: pins, points, laces and gloves,
And diverse toys, fitting a country fair;
But my heart lives, where duty serves and loves:
Turtles and twins, court's brood, a heav'nly pair.

Happy the heart that thinks of no removes.
