Editorial and information visual designer.

Since 2008, I’m the art director at IL, the monthly magazine of Il Sole 24 ORE. Before that, I worked for five years as a senior designer at Leftloft, a Milan based design studio, dealing with communication design, editorial projects and infographics. I hold a Bachelor in Industrial Design from Politecnico di Milano, where I graduated in 2004. In 2005, I took specialized classes in Communication Design at the London Metropolitan University. In 2007, I graduated cum laude at Politecnico di Milano, where I gained a Master degree in Industrial Design. My thesis focuses on newspaper design, and suggests a new design paradigm for the redesign of a newspaper. I’m professional journalist since 2010. I’m member of The Society of Publication Designer and professional member of AIAP, the Italian Council of Communication Design.

Daily chart : As a datum speaketh | The Economist

Notable infographics from The Economist’s archive

EXACTLY 170 years ago today issue No. 1 of The Economist appeared. Data were at the heart of the 16-page publication, part of the nascent fad of applying quantification and basic statistics to understand the political economy and much else. The front page was replete with a table of figures—called an “annexed tabular history”. And so it went for decades: the paper was stuffed with numbers. But there was a bias against infographics, as if visually representing data were for dilettantes. This is especially odd considering that the time-series, line graph and pie chart were created around 1800 and by mid-century used by everyone from the British Army to the Guardian newspaper to make sense of that era’s big data. Only in the 1930s did this newspaper begin to embrace charts as a way to present information—and then, only cautiously. What follows is a slideshow of infographics from past issues dating back to the first.

Ils sont mentionnés en introduction (more than 8 000 soldiers died in Irak and Afghanistan and thousands of civilians. ça sera la seule mention.

In search of food deserts

In search of food deserts

http://flowingdata.com/2013/08/27/in-search-of-food-deserts

Très esthétique et assez efficace...

Last time I looked at where major grocery stores are across the United States. Where you shop for groceries changes depending on what region you live in, but hunger and nutrition carries less variance. It’s important that everyone has access to healthy food options, so I looked at the data, this time from Google and from a different angle. Instead of where stores are, I looked at how far away the nearest grocery store is.

http://flowingdata.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/nearest-grocery-all-red.png

The map above shows a sample of locations across the country, and line length represents distance to the nearest store. For example, in areas with a lot of lines headed to one spot is an area with fewer grocery stores. In contrast, mostly small line segments mean more grocery stores, and therefore less distance to travel to buy groceries.

The Middle East, explained in one (sort of terrifying) chart

What could be simpler than the Middle East? A well-known Egyptian blogger who writes under the pseudonym The Big Pharaoh put together this chart laying out the region’s rivalries and alliances. He’s kindly granted me permission to post it, so that Americans might better understand the region. The joke is that it’s not a joke; this is actually pretty accurate.

Infographics could change your political views

WHAT IS IT that we’re really lacking when we want to introduce infographics into new areas of communication … ? Yes, we need some evidence that the infographics are really working.

Therefore it’s a very welcome paper, that has been released by assistant professor at Dartmouth College Brendan Nyhan, and assistant professor at Georgia State University Jason Reifler, titled ‘Opening The Political Mind?’

- Visions cartographiques / Statistiques, Cartographie, Visualisation, Infographie
