Bradley Manning: “Sometimes You Have to Pay a Heavy Price to Live in a Free Society” | Democracy Now!

Army Private Bradley Manning was sentenced Wednesday to 35 years in prison and dishonorably discharged for leaking more than 700,000 classified files and videos to WikiLeaks about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and U.S. foreign policy. The sentence is much longer than any punishment given to previous government officials who have leaked information to the media. Manning could be released on parole in about seven years.

In an editorial published yesterday, “Bradley Manning’s Excessive Sentence,” the New York Times has endorsed the suppression of whistleblowers spearheaded by the Obama administration.

Edito du NYT qui juge la sentence de #Bradley_Manning "excessive".
Il pourra faire appel dans 8 ans. Il est incarcéré depuis 3.

But the larger issue, which is not resolved by Private Manning’s sentencing, is the federal government’s addiction to secrecy and what it will do when faced with future leaks, an inevitability when 92 million documents are classified in a year and more than 4 million Americans have security clearance.

When the president says that the Ellsberg’s material was classified in a different way, he seems to be unaware that there was a higher classification on the documents Ellsberg leaked.

The sentencing of Bradley Manning
By Eric London
22 August 2013

The sentencing of whistleblower Bradley Manning to a 35-year prison term concludes a trial that will be remembered as a milestone in the collapse of American democracy. The true criminals in these proceedings hid under the cloak of the accusers, as a military court sought to whitewash the state crimes revealed by Manning by organizing a show trial against him.
