http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8914

http://monoskop.org/images/e/ed/Moholy-Nagy_Laszlo_Painting_Photography_Film.jpg

An English translation of the original 1925 Moholy-Nagy book presents his innovative photograms, the creative X-rays, super-wide-angle fisheye pictures, double prints, collages, montages, and the Bauhaus artist’s thoughts on the interrelationship of type, audio, and visual perception.

From the book: “The layout of the pages designed by Moholy-Nagy in 1927–bold sans-serif captions surrounded by lots of white space; compositions composed of arrows, dots, photographs, and heavy ruled lines — is much more like a movie storyboard or a musical score. It conveys a suggestion of imploding optical and retinal phenomena, much like driving down the Los Angeles Freeway at 70 mph or jolting through Philadelphia on the Metroliner.. This edition is a translation and facsimile of the second German edition of Malerei, Fotographie, Film published in 1927 by the Bauhaus Press; and it serves as a valuable reminder of the graphic design pioneered at the Bauhaus by Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer..”

“Gropius had invited the twenty-eight-year-old Hungarian phenom onto the Bauhaus faculty in 1923, and Malerei Fotografie Film is Moholy-Nagy’s first attempt to lay out his entire theory and program for photography, and ultimately, for the transformation of human vision.. The book’s bold typography and design enacted Moholy’s concept of ‘typofoto,’ involving the integration of type and images, which was further elaborated in his two later theoretical works, Von Material zu Architektur and Vision in Motion..” (Randell Roth)

Andrey Smirnov, Sound in Z: Experiments in Sound and Electronic Music in Early 20th-century Russia (2013) sur #Monoskop
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8860

Sound in Z supplies the astounding and long-lost chapter in the early story of electronic music: the Soviet experiment, a chapter that runs from 1917 to the late 1930s. Its heroes are Arseny Avraamov, inventor of Graphic Sound (drawing directly onto magnetic tape) and a 48-note scale; Alexei Gastev, who coined the term “bio-mechanics”; Leon Theremin, inventor of the world’s first electronic instrument, the Theremin; and others whose dreams for electronic sound were cut short by Stalin’s regime. Drawing on materials from numerous Moscow archives, this book reconstructs Avraamov’s Symphony of Sirens, an open-air performance for factory whistles, foghorns and artillery fire first staged in 1922, explores Graphic Sound and recounts Theremin’s extraordinary career-compiling the first full account of Russian electronic music.

« Diffusion du petit guide de la police et la gendarmerie sur les filatures »
https://copwatchnord-idf.info/?q=node/212

Bonne lecture.

Llorenç Barber, _Cuaderno de Yokohama_ (2009)

Llorenç Barber, Cuaderno de Yokohama (2009)
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8724

The booklet contains the series of 17 graphic scores that #Llorenç_Barber created in Yokohama (Japan) in 2005. The series brings together the visual exercises and/or pastimes that the composer compiled in a small notebook as he worked on Pocket Naumaquia, the closing concert of the International Triennale of Contemporary Art (ITCA) in December 2005. For this publication Barber has used these graphic notations as inspiration to write 17 texts that, like a game, readers can link to any score they wish.

http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8682

Ultra-red, _Five Protocols for Organized Listening_ (2012) sur Monoskop

Ultra-red, Five Protocols for Organized Listening (2012) sur #Monoskop
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8663

This workbook contains five categories of protocols for collectively performed listening procedures composed and studied by the international sound art collective, Ultra-red. Scanning the workbook readers will notice that the categories are not equivalent in status. For example, the category of fieldwork protocols marks a phase in a politically committed sound inquiry; what Ultra-red has termed, militant sound investigation. While fieldwork occurs as part of an overall strategy, sound walks and listening sessions can prove as generative in the early phases of collective reflection as when a group moves from refection to critical analysis.

http://www.ultrared.org/uploads/2012-Five_Protocols.pdf [#pdf]

http://www.ultrared.org/directory.html

http://www.publicrec.org/directory.html

sound political art, and the sound of our politics

In an increasingly conservative climate within electronic music and the audio arts, Public Record remains committed to releasing projects that do more than make political claims or represent political ideas. Like the Ultra-red organization itself, Public Record provides a space for exchange between artists and audiences of art directly engaging the political.

The German art critic Walter Benjamin once rebuked the Surrealists, demanding that artists who assume the mantle of revolutionaries would do better engaging actual political struggles than promoting their individual artistic careers. Benjamin challenges artists to pursue sustained and committed relationships with social movements.

Conversely, simply listening to political movements poses its own inadequacies. Convention and territorialism inflict many political organizers producing tendencies that result in stagnation. Leadership too often becomes a claim to power rather than a participatory process.

http://www.publicrec.org/img/nomusicheader.gif

http://www.publicrec.org/archive/2-06/2-06downloads.html

Ultra-red asks fifteen artists and activists to come up with a one-minute audio recording in response to the question: What is the sound of the war on the poor? The results range from field recordings, re-appropriated sounds, mini-symphonies and spoken rants.

Partha Mitter, _The Triumph of Modernism : India's Artists and the Avant-Garde, 1922—1947_ (2007)…

Partha Mitter, The Triumph of Modernism : India’s Artists and the Avant-Garde, 1922—1947 (2007) sur #Monoskop : si comme moi tu n’y connais pas grand chose en #art indien du XXe siècle, cela devrait faire une excellente initiatiion, avec #images et #histoire
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8657

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/P/1861893183.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This richly illustrated book explores the contested history of art and nationalism in the tumultuous last decades of British rule in India. Western avant-garde art inspired a powerful weapon of resistance among India’s artists in their struggle against colonial repression, and it is this complex interplay of Western modernism and Indian nationalism that is the core of this book.

The Triumph of Modernism takes the surprisingly unremarked Bauhaus exhibition in Calcutta in 1922 as marking the arrival of European modernism in India. In four broad sections Partha Mitter examines the decline of ‘oriental art’ and the rise of naturalism as well as that of modernism in the 1920s, and the relationship between primitivism and modernism in Indian art: with Mahatma Gandhi inspiring the Indian elite to discover the peasant, the people of the soil became portrayed by artists as ‘noble savages’. A distinct feminine voice also evolved through the rise of female artists. Finally, the author probes the ambivalent relationship between Indian nationalism and imperial patronage of the arts.

With a fascinating array of art works, few of which have either been seen or published in the West, The Triumph of Modernism throws much light on a previously neglected strand of modern art and introduces the work of artists who are little known in Europe or America. A book that challenges the dominance of Western modernism, it will be illuminating not just to students and scholars of modernism and Indian art, but to a wide international audience that admires India’s culture and history.

#Guy_Debord : “Cette mauvaise réputation…” (1993)
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8581

#Michel_Foucault : The Archaeology of Knowledge (1969-) [FR, ES, IT, EN, PT, AR, SR, TR, CZ, RU]
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8485

“The Archaeology of Knowledge (L'archéologie du savoir) is a methodological treatise promoting what the French philosopher Michel Foucault calls “archaeology” or the “archaeological method”, an analytical method he implicitly used in his previous works Madness and Civilization, The Birth of the Clinic, and The Order of Things. It is Foucault's only explicitly methodological work.

The premise of the book is that systems of thought and knowledge (“epistemes” or “discursive formations”) are governed by rules (beyond those of grammar and logic) which operate in the consciousness of individual subjects and define a system of conceptual possibilities that determines the boundaries of thought in a given domain and period.” (from Wikipedia)

#Thomas_Pynchon : Gravity's Rainbow (1973-) [EN, IT, HU]
http://monoskop.org/log/?p=8538

A few months after the Germans' secret V-2 rocket bombs begin falling on London, British Intelligence discovers that a map of the city pinpointing the sexual conquests of one Lieutenant Tyrone Slothrop, U.S. Army, corresponds identically to a map showing V-2 impact sites. The implications of this discovery launch Slothrop on a wildly comic extravaganza.

“Gravity's Rainbow is Pynchon's most celebrated novel. An intricate and allusive fiction that combines and elaborates on many of the themes of his earlier work, including preterition, paranoia, racism, colonialism, conspiracy, synchronicity, and entropy, the novel has spawned a wealth of commentary and critical material, including reader's guides, books and scholarly articles, online concordances and discussions, and art works. Its artistic value is often compared to that of James Joyce's Ulysses. Some scholars have hailed it as the greatest American post-WW2 novel, and it has similarly been described as ‘literally an anthology of postmodernist themes and devices'.” (from Wikipedia)

J. C. R. Licklider: Libraries of the Future (1965) (at Monoskop) - via worldedness.tumblr | offene Ablage: nothing to hide 2013-02-11

In this book J. C. R. Licklider discussed how information could be stored and retrieved electronically. Although he had not read Vannevar Bush’s “As We May Think,” he realized that Bush’s ideas had been diffused through the computing community enough to have provided a base for his own ideas. His theoretical information network, which he called a “procognitive system” sounds remarkably similar to Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web: “the concept of a ‘desk’ may have changed from passive to active: a desk may be primarily a display-and-control station in a telecommunication-telecomputation system-and its most vital part may be the cable (‘umbilical cord’) that connects it, via a wall socket, into the procognitive utility net”. This system could be used to connect the user to “everyday business, industrial, government, and professional information, and perhaps, also to news, entertainment, and education.” (source)

Christopher Schmitt and Simon St. Laurent discuss HTML5

Are we entering a new revolution on the web? HTML5 author and conference organizer Christopher Schmitt sat down to talk with O'Reilly editor Simon St. Laurent about why it's a great time to be a web developer. The new HTML5 spec has brought back the conversation about the web. Developers have been hacking the web for the last several years, and now those techniques have been pulled out of the hands of the developers and into the browser for better, faster websites. Let's hope we see continued innovation in the coming years to strengthen the ecosystem and personal connections.

Highlights from the full video interview include:

  • HTML5 and friends. HTML5 is often thought of a collection of technologies released at the same time, even though they aren't all technically "HTML5". [Discussed at the 0:39 mark]
  • The open web has won. Frameworks have given developers a way to create and share advances across browsers. [Discussed at the 03:29 mark]
  • Relieving your headaches. Native video and audio reduce the number of tasks needed to get media content on the web. [Discussed at the 05:20 mark]
  • Hybrid skills. Web developers need to understand code, design, and UI/UX to thrive in this evolving world. [Discussed at the 11:50 mark]
  • Design friendly CSS. Despite all the focus on HTML5 and JavaScript, CSS is growing ever more powerful and important. [Discussed at the 14:23 mark]
  • Accessible PDFs. PDFs are part of the mix, even if they follow a different track. [Discussed at the 23:46 mark]

Neat visualization of download ratios for ebook formats offered by O'Reilly

At O'Reilly we offer multiple (DRM-free) formats to choose among for customers who buy our ebooks. Since starting the program with PDF, EPUB, and Kindle-compatible Mobipocket formats, we've added an Android application file (.apk) and more recently the accessible DAISY format.

We track which of the formats customers actually download, and from the start PDF has been the dominant choice, though as the chart below shows, there's been a steady shift toward other formats, especially the open EPUB format (which can be read on nearly every ereader device, and is the format used by Apple's iBooks reader).

Screen shot 2010-09-30 at 5.16.35 PM.png

In some cases, customers download multiple formats, but this data just includes total downloads by week for each format, and goes all the way back to June of 2008.
