Turmoil in emerging economies a symptom of global crisis
By Barry Grey
27 August 2013

This summer’s crisis of the so-called “emerging market” economies reached a new stage last week, as India, Brazil, Turkey and Indonesia all announced emergency measures in an attempt to stem a plunge in their currencies and stock and bond markets.

India, whose rupee has fallen 15 percent versus the US dollar since the start of the year, announced restrictions on the amount of money individuals and companies can send abroad. Turkey raised its interest rates in hopes of curtailing capital flight that has driven down the lira by 10 percent. Indonesia announced steps to increase the availability of dollars in its markets, increase taxes on luxury items and reduce oil imports. Its rupiah has dropped 8 percent this year.

ACHR/DPU Junior Professionals Reporting from the Field

We have the privilege of being the first interns in a collaboration between the Asian Coalition of Housing Rights (ACHR) and the Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU). We are 5 young graduates from DPU working in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Philippines for 6 months, supporting the growth of ACHR in these countries. Our blog reflects on community-led development throughout South-East Asia, and the challenges faced both locally and more generally by the urban poor in their efforts to secure a place for themselves and their families within processes and mechanisms of the reproduction of the city.

Reporting on community-driven strategies to securing housing, land and a stake in (re)production processes of the city

Australian prime minister seeks Indonesian support for anti-refugee policies

By Patrick O’Connor
9 July 2013

In his first overseas trip since being reinstalled as prime minister on June 27, Kevin Rudd went to Indonesia late last week, to seek Jakarta’s support for harsh new measures to prevent asylum seekers from reaching Australia by boat. The Labor and Liberal parties are both making the issue central to their 2013 election campaigns as a diversion from their plans for stepped up austerity against the working class at home, and the promotion of war and militarism abroad.
