I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about maps this election. Australia has an interesting problem when showing election results on a map – because of our vast landscape, with population centres clustered at the edges, the electorates do not align very well with geography.

Federal seats range from a meagre 30 sq km in the inner city seat of Wentworth to the sprawling 1,587,758 sq km Western Australian electorate of Durack.

Because of this, it’s very hard to present at a glance election results in a geographic form.

Survivors recount boat sinking off Australia

Less than a week after Australia announced its new refugee policy, at least 11 bodies have been pulled from the waters off Indonesia after a boat carrying asylum seekers sank on Tuesday. The overloaded vessel had at least 200 refugees on board, many of them were children. Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Sukabumi.

Two more asylum seeker boats have sunk trying to reach Australia in the past five days, killing at least 13 people. The sinkings underscore the mounting human toll of the Labor government’s escalating measures to stop refugees seeking to exercise their democratic and legal right to flee persecution and claim asylum.

Last night, a search for survivors was called off within hours after a boat carrying about 150 people capsized earlier in the evening, killing at least four passengers. At the time it sank, two Australian Navy ships were escorting it to the government’s detention camp on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.

Australian prime minister seeks Indonesian support for anti-refugee policies

In his first overseas trip since being reinstalled as prime minister on June 27, Kevin Rudd went to Indonesia late last week, to seek Jakarta’s support for harsh new measures to prevent asylum seekers from reaching Australia by boat. The Labor and Liberal parties are both making the issue central to their 2013 election campaigns as a diversion from their plans for stepped up austerity against the working class at home, and the promotion of war and militarism abroad.
